Money is not the most romantic topic we could talk about however, it’s at the top of all of our minds. Money determines where you live, what you buy, how you spend your leisure time, your network of friends and acquaintances, even the way you view yourself and others. Unfortunately, it’s one of the least discussed premarital issues. Even if it is talked about, couples tend to skip over some of the harder issues: how much money do they feel they need to be happy; how would they spend money on luxuries vs. necessities; how much money is appropriate to save; and to what extend are they responsible for each other’s debts and charitable commitments.
In the world we live in today – a world that has the U.S. in debt to the tune of $10.9 Trillion (with a “T”) we all need to be cognizant of the effect and repercussions debt, finance, credit and our spending and savings habits can have on our long-term relationships.
Some couples heading into the serious phase will discuss their entire relationship and sexual history with one another. But these same couples often react quite differently when asked about how much money they have in the bank, one’s credit score, job security and/or their current credit card debt.
